Can Military Make Good Engineering Managers?

January 25, 2023

When we work on an Engineering Manager vacancy the job description includes:

Being used to continuous improvement ✅

Be an inspiring leader ✅

Be able to run PPM & reactive maintenance schedules ✅

Ensure projects are completed on time & and on budget ✅

Be able to multi-task ✅

A natural communicator ✅

Manage and supervise external contractors ✅

To be able to deal with the unexpected ✅

Manage contracts & suppliers ✅

Procuring engineering parts and equipment ✅

Conduct regular team reviews ✅

Previous experience in a commercial environment ?

All but one of these I can tick off confidently and the only way to get commercial experience is to get it. If you are an employer, would anything on this list hold you back from employing an ex-military engineering manager?
