WHY WON’T EMPLOYERS RECRUIT MORE EX-MILITARY?


I’d like to try and bust a few myths around why more employers don’t recruit ex-military. In my experience (6 years serving, 4 years running military resettlement magazines and 21 years running annex-military recruitment business)

  1. Lack of Understanding: Some employers may not fully understand the skills and experience that military personnel possess and may not recognize how these skills can be applicable to their organization.
  2. Misconceptions: There may be misconceptions or stereotypes about ex-military personnel, such as the belief that they are too rigid or hierarchical in their thinking and may struggle to adapt to civilian work environments.
  3. Limited job opportunities: The skills and experience that military personnel possess may not always align with the job openings available in the civilian sector.
  4. Post-service transition: The transition from military to civilian life can be challenging, and some veterans may struggle to articulate their skills and experience in a way that resonates with employers.
  5. Mental Health concerns: Some veterans may have mental health issues or physical disabilities that can make it difficult for them to secure employment.

It's important to note that many organizations do actively seek out ex-military personnel and recognize the value that they can bring to their workforce. There are also several programs and initiatives in place to help military veterans with the transition to civilian employment.
