CAN MILITARY MAKE GOOD OPERATIONS MANAGERS?

A client asked me this question a while back because he hadn’t recruited from the military before.

I asked him what he needed the Ops Manager to do.

Manage & mentor the team ✅

Be an inspiring leader ✅

Hold the company to a high standard ✅

Review operational procedures ✅

Ensure the team meet client’s expectations ✅

Be able to analyse problems and come up with solutions ✅

Just get stuff done ✅

Be calm when things aren’t going our way ✅

Be responsible for health & safety ✅

Manage contracts & suppliers ✅

Industry experience ❌

We missed a perfect score on the latter as this depends on the industry. However, when I investigated further the employer said it actually wasn’t that important and that if they had everything else it would be a Unicorn Ops Manager.

Unicorns DO exist and they’re leaving their combats behind for life as a civvy.
